Modigliani himself
Some artists are enhanced by a retrospective exhibition and others, on the contrary, are diminished. After seeing the great exhibition at the Tate Modern, I realise that Modigliani belongs to the latter group. Jean Cocteau said that the portrait Modigliani did of him was not of him, but of Modigliani himself, and that it was the better for it. The snag was that it was the same with all the portraits Modigliani did.
