The best architect in history
When I was little I wanted to be Michelangelo. Since then my ambition has never stopped shrinking. (Unlike Dalí who said, “When I was little I wanted to be king and since then my ambition has never stopped growing”.
The whole square, la Piazza del Campidoglio, is a masterpiece. The trapezoidal plan, the geometry of the pavement, the two palaces along the sides, the pedestal for the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. The Palazzo Senatorio’s flight of steps is a masterful solution to the eternal problem of how to support balusters on diagonal slabs. Michelangelo is, for me, amongst other things, the best architect in history.
