A sophisticated and mysterious artist who, during his directorship, repainted the rooms of the French Academy in Rome in more subtle tones.
He spent the last years of his life, like so many wise men—Nabokov, Chaplin, Freddy Mercury and Borges, amongst others—in Switzerland, infatuated with a Japanese lady: mysterious, attractive, oriental, as happens with outstanding old men.
